In the post Covid environment, we are all noticing a shift in the world of work. Industries that a year ago provided careers with real longevity and security have disappeared overnight.  Jobs that didn’t exist in the past, are springing up with ever increasing frequency.

Change feels impossible…

This new world means that the very skills of being able to “pivot” are becoming more and more important.

So what is a “career pivot” and how do we make it happen?

A career pivot can mean anything from changing roles within an organisation, through to changing roles and industries simultaneously.  This can seem insurmountable, however in my 20 plus years of coaching executives through various career changes, I have come up with a simple, structured and proven 3 step approach that has facilitated many very interesting career pivots.

Step 1

Understand your product – Personal Brand

Most people understand that when marketing something, product analysis is the critical first step in the marketing campaign, however they rarely apply that same logic to marketing themselves.

Spending time analysing your intrinsic transferrable strengths, by doing an in-depth analysis of your achievements, is the first step to understanding your personal brand. This means identifying your strengths (the skills that you enjoy using). Your intrinsic motivators and values are also worth thinking about, to help you determine your career objectives. Once you have done so, it’s important to make sure all your “marketing materials” reflect your personal brand and your career plan, especially your LinkedIn.

Step 2

Understand your Market

Market analysis is fundamental to any marketing campaign. Understanding market trends and implications can really help to target your campaign to the right organisation, and possibly even identify the right decision maker for your dream role.  Looking at where there will be growth in the new world is certainly very interesting at the moment.  Everyone is keen to get a sense of what the new world of work looks like.

Step 3

Start your marketing campaign through building true, authentic connections

We all know, …it’s not what you know, it’s not who you know,

It’s who knows you and what you bring…
